The title of this classic Diptyque fragrance translates to Shadow in the Water, completely appropriate for its scent where scattered Bulgarian roses struggle to break through bushes of black currant leaf, not unlike a shadow struggling to emerge from the water. It's interesting, too, that the rose note in this particular scent is really more like the shadow of a rose, never stealing the spotlight from the black currant leaf that fights so intrepidly for dominance. In the head of the scent, a ray of leafy green takes the focus, gradually reaching a balance with warm, luxurious rose notes at the heart. Eventually, and only in the base of the scent does this become apparent, the black currant leaf moves towards the backseat, and turns into more of a tinge than the focus of the fragrance. Bulgarian rose,
now at the forefront, is still a shadowy incarnation of the magnificent flower, which isn't allowed to open up its blossoms to shower us with its lush floral notes. Instead, accented by black currant leaf, we are given a truly unique embodiment of the rose, more
contemporary than many of its predecessors and much more accessible to women and men alike. It's still rosy, but it's much greener, and there's something subtly fruit-like about the mixture. L'ombre dans l'Eau is a majestic scent with a clever reference to black currant berries, that's just as modern now as it was when it was released 20 years ago.

United by a passion for creativity and design, three artisans became friends and partners. They opened a shop at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain to showcase their avant-garde fabric designs and decorative items from their travels. The trio offered colored candles to match their fabrics, adding perfumed wax. Customers fell in love with the inimitable fragrances. Word traveled. Their cachet grew. In 1963, they introduced the first Diptyque scented candle. In 1968, the first line of Diptyque fragrances was launched. Today, the three Parisian artists are world-renowned purveyors of fragrance and scented candles. |
