The Rainier Park blanket was introduced on Febuary 1, 1928 and was originally woven with a representation of flowers found in the pristine scenes that make Mt. Rainier so very special. Eventually, the design evolved into a solid colored body with three lines of black, yellow and green.
Since the early 1900s, Pendleton Woolen Mills has honored America's National Parks with a collection of distinctive park blankets. Its historic markings and colors date back to the frontier trading posts. Traders would indicate the weight of the blanket offered in exchange for furs by holding up one finger for each pound. The original blankets incorporated three, four or five black stripes in the design, which indicated the value of the blanket. Colors and variations of the original striped theme have been adapted to reflect distinguishing characteristics of each park and blanket in the collection. National Park Blankets are still woven at the original Pendleton Woolen Mill in the foothills of Oregon’s Blue Mountains, just as they were more than 100 years ago.
Pendleton traces it's roots to an English weaver named Thomas Kay who moved to Oregon in 1863 and helped establish the states second woolen mill. His family moved in 1909 and opened Pendleton, Oregon's first woolen mill, where six generations have now kept this symbol of the West alive and flourishing. Native Americans adopted their colorful blankets as ceremonial gifts, and have inspired the creation of beautiful textiles since. Pendleton has crafted commemorative blankets for national parks, furnished Olympic athletes, given a blanket to every president since Warren G. Harding and California surf band The Beach Boys wore their signature plaid shirts on the cover of the album Surfer Girl in 1963. To this day Pendleton works directly with local wool farmers to ensure the highest quality materials. |
